Here is a very rare pair of colorful Cretaceous Notopocorystes Dichrous crab fossils. Notopocorystes is part of a large group of crabs called frog crabs. They are in the superfamily - Raninoidea. Family - Raninidea. Genus - Notopocorystes. Species - Dichrous. The way these fossils are preserved represents an event called a Lagerstatte. These unique events represent a geologic event like a volcano, storm, etc. In this case the lagerstatte was formed from a volcanic event. A major volcano dropped a lot of ash in the ocean causing a tube worm bloom. The tube worms attracted the notopocorystes crabs. The crabs congregated in the area by the millions. Eventually the tube worms were consumed entirely and the crabs died in mass and were preserved nodules. They were found in the Cretaceous, Britton Formation of Dallas Texas.
