Here is an incredibly rare offering of a displayable and essentially complete 6cm fossilized bat Palaeochiropteryx tupaiodon from the Middle Eocene of the famous Messel Pit at Darmstadt, Germany. Articulated bats are a rare find, to say the least, and this example shows a skull, vertebrae including a complete tail and some ribs, along with the pelvis and two rear limb bones (femur). Both folded wings are articulated and show the elongated digits that support the skin between the wing and the rear limbs to enable flight; the skin is also preserved, especially on the left wing. The dark staining over the body area is natural and represents original fur!
It was prepared using a classic resin transfer process. The oil shales the fossils at Messel Pit are filled with water they would disintegrate if allowed to dry out. They have been described of having the consistency of soggy cardboard. The fossils are coated in a layer of resin to create an artificial matrix and then all of the shale is removed from the other side. This leaves the fossil embedded in a plate of hardened resin.
The Messel Pit was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995 so the only material that is or will be available is coming from old collections, no new finds thus an extremely difficult to aquire piece. The price is firm on such a piece.
