Here is an amazing specimen a whole placoderm fish fossil in rock with the tail preserved! Coccosteus is an extinct genus of arthrodire placoderm fish just like Dunkleosteus that lived during the Devonian period, which occurred approximately 416 to 359 million years ago. It is known from fossils found in North America, Europe, and Asia. This fossil was found in the Sandwick Fish Beds, Middle Devonian, of Orkney Scotland.
Coccosteus was a heavily armored fish, with a thick bony skull and large sharp teeth. It had a flattened body and could reach up to two feet in length. The armor plates that covered its body were made of bone and provided protection against predators.
This specimen was glue repaired from a old clean break but it is barely noticeable on the front display side and the specimen still displays beautiful, but this keeps the specimen in an affordable range for such a fossil.
