Here a great cluster of eurypterid (Eurypterus remipes) fossil disarticulated molts from the famous Lang's Quarry in Herkimer County, New York. Scattered throughout the plate are various elements of eurypterids such as the head, body segments, paddles, and stingers. Plates such as these are associated to and believed to be molts from the sea scorpions. Makes a great plate example of this phenomenon for your fossil display!
Eurypterids, commonly known as sea scorpions, are an extinct group of arthropods related to arachnids that include the largest known arthropods to have ever lived. Prevalent during the Silurian and Devonian, eurypterids were segmented aquatic arthropods with compound eyes and two club-like paddles. Some species exhibit toothed claws and may therefore have been predators.
